Material Selection for Single-Unit Anterior Restorations

Lithium disilicate and layered zirconia appear to be the most prevalent materials used for single-unit anterior crowns. These materials offer the necessary mechanical properties as well as sufficient optical characteristics needed in this type of restoration. There now are also more translucent versions of zirconia available that can be used for monolithic anterior restorations.

Dental ceramics is a sub-specialty of dental technologies but it is also a material. There are different kinds of dental ceramics, but the most difficult to handle and the one that requires the most knowledge and dedication due to its artistic approach, is feldspathic porcelain. This porcelain is manufactured from feldspar, a mineral which happens to have a similar crystalline structure and optical properties than the enamel present in teeth. This mineral is ground, refined, mixed with other materials and purified in a long process until the obtention of a thin powder which is what we know as dental ceramic or porcelain.
